/// Playwright alternative
A Playwright alternative for Java, Selenium and locked-down networks
Playwright is an excellent framework if your team writes TypeScript and your machines can download browser binaries. The teams that look for an alternative usually can’t do one of those two things — the QA group codes in Java, or the agency network blocks Playwright’s browser downloads outright. L3git records point-and-click and emits Cucumber + Selenium you own.
Where Playwright is strong
Playwright is fast, free, well-engineered and backed by Microsoft; its auto-waiting and trace viewer are genuinely best in class. If your engineers are comfortable in TypeScript or Python, your CI agents can fetch Chromium/WebKit/Firefox builds, and you do not need a no-code authoring path for analysts, it is a strong default and we would tell you so.
Where L3git differs
L3git targets the other half of the market: Java/Cucumber shops, regulated networks, and testers who do not write code. It drives the Edge already installed by IT (never downloads a browser), generates standard Selenium + REST Assured you keep, and folds Section 508 auditing and API testing into the same seat.
- No browser downloads. L3git automates the Microsoft Edge your IT already approved; air-gapped builds ship the WebDriver. Playwright installs its own browser builds, which STIG-hardened or proxy-restricted hosts commonly block.
- Java, Cucumber, Selenium out. The generated project drops into an existing Maven/Jenkins estate; no Node toolchain to get approved.
- Point-and-click authoring. Analysts and manual testers record flows; engineers review the generated code. Playwright’s codegen is a starting point for developers, not a no-code tool.
- Section 508 audit of every page is a checkbox, with a standalone compliance chapter per run. With Playwright you wire up
@axe-core/playwrightand write the assertions and reporting yourself. - API, Kafka, gRPC and WebSocket steps live in the same test as the UI steps.
- Local AI (Ollama) for authoring and repair — nothing leaves the machine.

Common questions
Is L3git a replacement for Playwright?
For a Java/Selenium shop or a locked-down network, yes. For a TypeScript team that can download browsers freely, Playwright is free and excellent; L3git is the better fit when you need no-code authoring, Java output, or an air-gapped install.
Why does the browser download matter?
Playwright installs its own Chromium, WebKit and Firefox builds into a profile folder. Hardened government and enterprise hosts frequently block that download or flag the unsigned binaries. L3git drives the Edge your IT already installed and, for air-gapped sites, ships the matching WebDriver inside the zip.
Can Playwright do accessibility testing?
Yes, through the @axe-core/playwright package, which you install, call from each test and report on yourself. L3git makes it a checkbox: every page visited is audited against the Section 508 and WCAG 2.0 A/AA rule sets and a standalone compliance chapter is written on every run.
What does L3git generate?
A standard Maven project: Cucumber feature files, Java step definitions and page objects on Selenium, REST Assured for API steps, with a runner, Jenkinsfile and GitHub Actions workflow. It runs with mvn test whether or not L3git is installed.
